🌐 Germany Breaks With Washington on Iran Conflict Credibility

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz publicly broke with Washington, saying the U.S. is being humiliated by Iran, as intelligence assessments increasingly contradict official American accounts. President Trump maintains Iran is near collapse, but Vice President Vance reportedly questions Pentagon estimates on missile stockpiles and Iranian capabilities.
The Center for Strategic and International Studies estimates the U.S. has consumed more than half its prewar munitions supply, while intelligence reports indicate Iran still holds roughly two-thirds of its air force.
The divide: The administration is split between those backing continued pressure and those calling for military strikes. Iran has proposed halting blockades while delaying nuclear talks. Oil prices remain above $100 per barrel, the UAE exits OPEC on May 1, and casualties in Lebanon and Gaza continue to mount.

🏥 Nebraska Becomes the Nation’s Test Case for Medicaid Work Requirements

Nebraska is now the first state to implement Medicaid work requirements under new federal rules, requiring adults ages 19–64 in the expansion program to complete 80 hours per month of work, school, or community service or risk losing coverage. The state must also reverify about 70,000 enrollees.
Researchers project 5 to 10 million Americans could lose Medicaid nationally once the policy expands in eight months. Studies consistently show work requirements reduce enrollment without boosting employment, largely by adding administrative barriers for people who already qualify.
The concern: States had just 18 months to build these systems, and gaps are already emerging. Applicants have a 30-day window to respond to information requests, with some people reportedly working against medical advice to stay enrolled. Whatever Nebraska’s federal review yields in June becomes the national template.

:📈 Today’s Poll: Medicaid Mandate
Nebraska just became the first state requiring Medicaid recipients to log 80 hours of monthly work or community service to keep coverage. Supporters say it encourages self-sufficiency and responsible use of public funds; critics say administrative barriers will push out people who already qualify.

📺 White House Calls for Kimmel’s Firing After Correspondents’ Dinner Attack

Following an alleged assassination attempt at a White House Correspondents’ Dinner, the Trump administration pointed to jokes Jimmy Kimmel made two days prior as contributing to a climate of violence.
Kimmel denied any incitement, saying his joke implying Melania Trump appeared to be awaiting widowhood was not a call to violence. The White House and FCC are pushing for license reviews of Disney-ABC, citing existing DEI investigations.
The backdrop: The suspect’s ideologically mixed online history complicates the administration’s framing. Republicans also separately advanced a $400 million proposal for a presidential ballroom, a contrast critics note given budget cuts projected to strip Medicaid coverage from millions.
