Trump Wants Jimmy Kimmel Fired for a Joke. Republicans Want $400 Million for a Ballroom. And the Suspect’s Profile Doesn’t Match the Narrative.
The big picture: After the alleged assassin’s social media activity painted a complicated picture (anti-Trump, anti-Iran war, anti-immigration policy, but also reposting moderate Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans), the administration zeroed in on Jimmy Kimmel — who told an “expectant widow” joke about Melania at a parody dinner two days before the attack. Trump, Melania, and the White House are calling for Kimmel’s firing. The FCC may pursue an early review of Disney/ABC’s broadcast licenses. Meanwhile, Republicans are pushing $400 million in legislation to build Trump a ballroom.
Why it matters: This story is layered. Political violence is real. Federal pressure on broadcast licenses to punish a comedian is also real. And so is $400 million in proposed spending while Medicaid gets gutted. All three are happening at once.
The suspect’s profile
Per CNN, a senior DOJ official confirmed the X account belongs to Cole Allen. The accounts criticized Trump on Ukraine, Iran, and immigration BUT also reposted moderate Democrats like Will Stancil and anti-Trump Republicans like Bill Kristol. Posts escalated over time, with statements about gun ownership and government treason. Both X and Bluesky took the accounts down.
The Kimmel joke
At his parody Correspondents’ Dinner, Kimmel said: “Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.” Two days later, the actual Correspondents’ Dinner attack happened. Melania, Trump, the White House account, and Karoline Leavitt all called for Kimmel to be fired. Leavitt: the manifesto’s language is “indistinguishable” from things heard “daily from so many” — including Kimmel.
Kimmel’s response
He addressed it directly: “It was not by any stretch of the imagination a call to assassination, and they know that... I think a great place to start to dial [violent rhetoric] back would be to have a conversation with your husband about it.”
The FCC threat
Semafor reports the FCC will likely pursue an early review of Disney/ABC’s broadcast licenses. Two existing FCC investigations are already underway — one into ABC’s DEI practices, one into a Senate candidate’s View appearance for alleged equal-opportunity violations. Brendan Carr has threatened broadcast licenses before.
The $400 million ballroom
Sen. Lindsey Graham announced legislation to authorize $400 million for a presidential ballroom, arguing it would have prevented the attack. Republicans piling on include Lauren Boebert, Rand Paul, Eric Schmitt, Tim Sheehy. AOC pushed back: in an era of price hikes, healthcare cuts, and unaffordable rent, building “an ornate castle” without accountability is the wrong priority.
By the numbers
$400 million — proposed ballroom legislation
2 — days between Kimmel’s joke and the attack
2 — existing FCC investigations into ABC
11+ billion — cost of the first 6 days of the Iran war
5-10 million — Americans projected to lose Medicaid coverage from the Big Beautiful Bill
The bottom line
A joke. A tragedy. An administration response. A federal regulator threatening broadcast licenses. A $400 million ballroom proposal. And a suspect whose profile turns out to be more complicated than the political framing wants it to be.
