Germany Says America Is Being “Humiliated” by Iran. JD Vance Reportedly Doesn’t Believe the Pentagon’s War Numbers. And the U.S. May Have Burned Through Half Its Missiles.
The big picture: Trump claims Iran is in a “state of collapse.” Iran’s defense ministry told the U.S. to “abandon its illegal and irrational demands.” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said publicly that America is being “humiliated” by Iran. The Atlantic reports VP JD Vance has repeatedly questioned the Pentagon’s claims about U.S. missile stockpiles and Iran’s remaining military capacity. The UAE is leaving OPEC. Oil companies are reporting doubled profits while gas prices hit war-highs. And underneath all of it, Lebanon and Gaza casualty counts keep climbing.
Why it matters: The official narrative coming out of the White House and Pentagon is increasingly diverging from what allies, intelligence assessments, and even the Vice President are saying behind the scenes. The cost of this war — military, economic, human — keeps growing.
Trump vs. reality
Trump says Iran is in “state of collapse.” Iran says the U.S. needs to “abandon its illegal and irrational demands.” Trump has previously said Iran was defeated, that Iran underwent regime change, that Iran agreed to all his demands. None of that turned out to be true.
The Iranian proposal
Iran offered to end blockades on both sides while postponing nuclear talks. Trump is expected to reject. The administration is split — one camp thinks pressure will eventually work, the other believes only military strikes will. Trump reportedly told an advisor “all Iran’s leaders understand is bombs.”
JD Vance doesn’t trust the Pentagon
The Atlantic reports VP Vance has repeatedly questioned Pentagon claims about U.S. missile reserves and Iran’s remaining capabilities. Trump and Hegseth say American stockpiles are “virtually unlimited” and Iran is “wholly defeated.” CSIS assessment: U.S. has used more than half its prewar supply of 4 key munitions. Intelligence assessments: Iran retains 2/3 of its air force, the bulk of its missile-launching capability, and most of its fast boats.
Allies are saying it out loud
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz this week: “An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership... The Iranians are clearly stronger than expected and the Americans clearly have no truly convincing strategy.”
The UAE leaves OPEC
Effective May 1st. The UAE is one of OPEC’s largest producers and one of the few that can quickly increase output. Experts say its departure will make it harder for OPEC to stabilize prices long-term. Short-term: Strait closure means oil is still over $100/barrel and U.S. gas prices are at war-highs.
The profit story
350.org analysis: war fallout could cost the world over $1 trillion (not counting inflation, food costs, etc.). BP Q1 profits more than doubled. 350.org head: “An obscene amount of money will continue to flow to oil coffers at the expense of ordinary people already struggling to afford fuel, electricity, and food.”
The stories underneath
Zelensky accused Israel of buying “stolen” Ukrainian grain from Russian-occupied territory. Ukraine summoned Israel’s ambassador. Israel denied it. Israel just ordered residents of 16 more southern Lebanese towns to evacuate. Lebanese death toll since March 2: 2,521 including women, children, journalists, medical workers. Gaza death toll: nearly 73,000. Doctors Without Borders accused Israel of using “water as a weapon.”
By the numbers
50%+ — U.S. prewar supply of 4 key munitions reportedly used
2/3 — of Iran’s air force still operational per intelligence
$100+ — current price per barrel of oil
2,521 — Lebanese killed since March 2
~73,000 — Gaza direct death toll
$1 trillion — projected global cost of the war fallout
The bottom line
The administration’s public narrative is breaking down on multiple fronts — from allies, from intelligence assessments, and from the Vice President himself. Meanwhile, the human and economic costs keep growing, and oil companies are the only obvious winners.
