🌎 Cuba Expands Private Enterprise Amid Crisis

Cuba’s government approved a major package of economic reforms last week, expanding opportunities for private businesses and foreign investment as the country faces ongoing shortages, blackouts, and economic challenges.
The changes would give businesses greater freedom to import and export goods, increase autonomy for state-run companies, and encourage investment from Cubans living abroad. The reforms represent one of the most significant shifts toward market-based policies in modern Cuban history.
The shift: Cuban officials pointed to economic models used in China and Vietnam as examples of market-oriented reforms within communist systems. The reforms come as Cuba continues to navigate both domestic economic pressure and an ongoing US trade embargo.

🗳️ Oklahoma Candidate Exits After Endorsement Reversal

One day after advancing to a runoff in Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, pastor and congressional candidate Jackson Lahmeyer suspended his campaign after President Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement.
The decision followed reports of suggestive messages Lahmeyer exchanged with campaign fundraiser and former Miss Oklahoma Caitlin Simmons Key. Key also alleged she received weekly payments that were intended to keep her from speaking publicly, though Lahmeyer has disputed the characterization.
The fallout: Lahmeyer finished second in a crowded primary field with nearly 26% of the vote, earning a runoff against State Representative Mark Tedford. After Trump shifted his endorsement to Tedford, Lahmeyer announced he was ending his campaign, leaving Tedford as the clear favorite in the heavily Republican district.

⚖️ Gilgo Beach Killer Receives Multiple Life Sentences

Rex Heuermann, the man charged in the Gilgo Beach serial killings investigation, was sentenced to multiple life terms after pleading guilty to seven murders and admitting responsibility for an eighth killing.
The case remained unsolved for years before investigators linked Heuermann to evidence including cellphone records, witness accounts, DNA recovered from discarded items, and planning documents found on his computer. He was arrested in 2023 after a renewed investigation.
The sentencing: Family members of the victims addressed the court, describing the lasting impact of the crimes on their lives. Heuermann briefly acknowledged responsibility during the hearing before the judge imposed the sentence, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life in prison.
