WORLD NEWS
⚠️ Germany Clarifies Controversial Military Travel Rule

Germany’s “Military Service Modernisation Act,” introduced this year, drew concern after wording suggested men aged 17 and older would need approval to remain abroad for more than three months. Following backlash, German officials clarified that the requirement is not currently in effect.
The clarification came amid concern the law reflected broader preparations for expanded military obligations. Officials said the provision is intended as a contingency tied to potential national defense scenarios.
The shift: Defense officials emphasized the rule does not apply in peacetime and would only be activated in a national defense situation where conscription measures could be reinstated. While no reporting or approval requirements are being enforced, the episode has sparked renewed debate over Germany’s long-term military readiness.
BUSINESS
💻 Zephyr Energy Loses $1 Million in Email Scam

A hacker stole nearly $1 million from Zephyr Energy by rerouting a payment intended for a contractor to a different bank account. The attack required minimal technical skill and relied on manipulating payment details.
The incident highlights the growing threat of business email compromise, a type of cybercrime where attackers gain access to communications and alter financial information. Authorities say these schemes account for billions in losses globally each year.
The takeaway: Zephyr is working with banks and authorities to try to recover the funds, though success is often time-sensitive and uncertain. The case underscores the importance of basic cybersecurity practices, from verifying payment details to securing email systems.

📰 ProPublica Strike Puts AI at Center of Talks

Journalists at ProPublica walked off the job for 24 hours after more than two years of stalled contract negotiations with management. The strike centers in part on concerns over how artificial intelligence will be used in newsroom operations.
The union is seeking protections to ensure reporters are not replaced by AI and want input on how the technology is implemented. The dispute also includes pay and job security issues and reflects broader tensions across the media industry over AI adoption.
The latest: The union recently filed an unfair-labor-practice charge with the National Labor Relations Board after extended contract talks. ProPublica says it is still evaluating how AI could support reporting. NewsGuild of New York president Susan DeCarava said the outcome could help shape AI standards in journalism.
