Trump Fired Bondi. She Begged Him Not To. The Epstein Testimony Is Still Coming.
The big picture: Trump fired Attorney General Pam Bondi, announcing it on Truth Social while calling her “a Great American Patriot.” According to The Daily Mail, she begged him not to do it in an “explosive showdown” at the White House. The firing comes right before she was expected to testify under subpoena about the Epstein files. The House Oversight Committee says she’s still legally required to appear. Tulsi Gabbard may be next, per The Guardian.
Why it matters: Bondi weaponized the DOJ for Trump in unprecedented ways. Her offense wasn’t incompetence — it was that she wasn’t aggressive enough against political enemies and the Epstein files made him look bad. If that gets you fired, the message to every other cabinet member is clear: the job isn’t the job. The job is loyalty.
The firing: Trump posted: “We love Pam.” Less than 24 hours earlier he said she was “doing a good job.” The Daily Mail reported she “begged” him not to fire her after he accused her of an “unforgivable offense,” which the outlet claims was tipping off Congressman Swalwell about FBI documents related to an alleged Chinese spy. That claim hasn’t been verified by other outlets.
The Epstein timing: Bondi was expected to testify under subpoena before the House Oversight Committee about the Epstein files. The committee’s ranking member confirmed she’s still legally required to appear despite the firing. The AG gets fired right before testifying under oath about one of the most explosive investigations in the country.
The replacement: Deputy AG Todd Blanche serving as acting AG. Expected permanent replacement: EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin, Trump’s “secret weapon” who’s been executing the “energy dominance” agenda. Unlike Noem (demoted to State Department), Bondi is leaving the administration entirely for what Trump called “a much needed and important new job in the private sector.”
Gabbard next? The Guardian reports Trump is polling advisers on replacing the DNI. His issue: she refused to condemn Joe Kent over the Iran war. Trump’s endorsement: “Yeah, sure. She’s a little bit different in her thought process than me.” Her spokesperson called that confidence. It isn’t.
The pattern:
Kristi Noem — demoted (DHS → State Department envoy)
Pam Bondi — fired (AG → private sector)
Tulsi Gabbard — potentially next (DNI)
By the numbers:
3 — cabinet-level officials removed or at risk (Noem, Bondi, Gabbard)
24 — hours between “she’s doing a good job” and “she’s fired”
18 — intelligence agencies overseen by the DNI Gabbard may lose
0 — times Bondi’s Epstein deposition obligation has changed
The bottom line: Last night Trump said Bondi was doing a good job. Today she’s gone. She begged to stay. He said no. AND she’s still expected to testify about Epstein under oath. Noem was demoted. Gabbard may be next. If someone who weaponized the DOJ for the president in unprecedented ways can get fired for not being aggressive enough, the message to everyone else in this cabinet is unmistakable: do what Trump wants, or you’re next. “We love Pam” are apparently the last words you hear before the axe falls.
