The FBI Director’s Drinking Habits Are Reportedly So Bad His Team Asked for “Breaching Equipment” to Wake Him Up
The big picture: A bombshell Atlantic report describes FBI Director Kash Patel as erratic, frequently absent, and prone to heavy drinking — to the point where his own security detail has struggled to wake him up and officials once asked for breaching equipment to get to him behind a locked door. Over two dozen current and former officials spoke to the outlet. Patel has now sued The Atlantic for $250 million.
Why it matters: This isn’t a personality quirk. The FBI director oversees national security investigations, terrorism response, and the federal criminal justice apparatus. Officials have reportedly linked his impulsive behavior to premature or inaccurate public statements about active cases — including Charlie Kirk’s assassination and the Brown University shooting.
What The Atlantic found
Six sources said that early in Patel’s tenure, meetings had to be rescheduled for later in the day due to his alcohol-fueled nights. Officials described him getting visibly intoxicated at D.C.’s Ned’s and the Poodle Room in Vegas. His security detail has struggled to wake him up multiple times, AND in one instance, officials requested “breaching equipment” to access him. Agents reportedly “lost their shit” over his delays on time-sensitive decisions.
The DOJ ethics handbook prohibits “habitually using alcohol or other intoxicants to excess.” The inspector general has warned that off-duty drinking can make employees vulnerable to foreign coercion.
The “freak-out”
The Atlantic reports that earlier this month, Patel struggled to log into an internal computer system, became convinced he’d been fired, and frantically called aides announcing his firing. Members of Congress and the FBI itself reportedly called the White House asking who was running the agency. Patel had not been fired — BUT senior officials are reportedly already discussing replacements.
Where Trump stands
Trump is reportedly unbothered by FBI grumblings AND pleased with Patel’s purge of the agency. BUT he’s also reportedly complained Patel seems unprepared on TV and hasn’t moved fast enough on investigating Trump’s enemies. Trump is a lifelong teetotaler — his brother died after struggling with alcoholism — and reportedly called Patel personally after Patel was filmed chugging beer with the Olympic hockey team in February.
Patel’s Hail Mary
On Fox yesterday, Patel announced that “arrests are coming soon” related to the 2020 election — a clear effort to refocus attention. He also announced he’d sue The Atlantic. He followed through today with a $250 million defamation suit. To win, he has to prove actual malice — which requires discovery, which means depositions from the 24+ officials who spoke to the outlet. That may not be the fight he wants.
By the numbers
24+ — current and former officials who spoke to The Atlantic
6 — sources confirming rescheduled meetings due to drinking
$250 million — Patel’s defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic
1 — time breaching equipment was reportedly requested for the director
The bottom line
Filing a $250 million lawsuit is a bold response to a story sourced by more than two dozen officials. Discovery is a two-way street — and the people who spoke to The Atlantic would likely be asked to say the same things under oath. Meanwhile, the person running federal law enforcement is the subject of this story.
