LAW & ORDER
⚖️ Former Fauci Adviser Pleads Guilty in COVID Records-Concealment Case
Dr. David Morens, a former senior adviser to Dr. Anthony Fauci, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States after admitting he used a personal email account to conceal federal records about COVID-19 research.
Morens worked with Fauci at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Prosecutors say he used his personal account for messages about the virus’s origins and grant funding to sidestep public-records laws. Fauci has not been accused of wrongdoing.
The fallout: The records involved COVID-19 research grants, including one that NIH terminated after a subaward went to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Morens previously said he wanted to keep controversial communications from being misconstrued and protect scientists from threats; prosecutors said the arrangement was designed to evade public-records laws.

💻 Meta Faces Landmark Trial Over Child Safety Claims
Meta is standing trial in a California federal court, where 29 states accuse it of harming children. They allege the company designed its platforms to be addictive, downplayed the risks, and violated young users’ privacy.
The states allege those design choices contributed to youth depression, anxiety and suicide; Meta disputes the claims and says it has invested in safety and did not design its platforms to target children.
The testimony: A former Meta engineering director testified that CEO Mark Zuckerberg fostered a culture that prioritized growth and engagement over child safety, an allegation Meta disputes. Meta says the theoretical maximum penalty could reach $1.4 trillion. State attorneys told the judge a figure closer to $200 billion was more likely.

ECONOMY
📉 U.S. National Debt Reaches Record $40 Trillion
The U.S. national debt has reached a record $40 trillion, months ahead of an earlier CBO forecast. The federal deficit is projected to approach $2 trillion this fiscal year, meaning the government is on track to spend about that much more than it collects.
Officials cite several pressures: military spending on the war in Iran, plus Social Security, Medicare, and interest on the debt itself. The Congressional Budget Office says tariff collections are now projected to be about $250 billion below its earlier estimate after the Supreme Court struck down the administration’s IEEPA tariffs.
The strain: The debt passed $39 trillion in March, showing how fast it’s climbing. The White House says it’s cutting waste and chasing growth to steady the debt-to-GDP ratio. Meanwhile, everyday costs like groceries, gas, and loans keep rising as wages slip.

Let’s end the week with some feel-good stories:
A retired fisherman in British Columbia gave mouth-to-mouth CPR to a drowning river otter tangled in netting, and it worked! After a week of rehab, the otter swam back to its family, pausing to glance back at its rescuer. 🦦❤️
An 18-year-old in Ireland, Arya Satheesh, invented a plant-based plastic that biodegrades in about two weeks and breaks down microplastics as it goes, earning a top Earth Prize. Teen ingenuity for the win! 🌱🏆
A Wendy’s worker on Cape Cod who fled violence in Brazil is headed to Yale on a full ride, thanks to bosses who believed in him and funded his education. Proof that one champion can change everything! 🎓✨

TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
Hawaii
Hawaii was admitted as the 50th state on August 21, 1959, just months after Alaska became the 49th. President Eisenhower signed the proclamation that day, and the 50-star flag debuted the following July. It remains the only U.S. state made up entirely of islands.
