LAW & POLICY
📜 DOJ Declines to Defend Federal Gun Silencer Rules

The Justice Department declined to seek an emergency appeal of a Texas ruling that struck down federal registration and approval rules for silencers and short-barreled guns.
The NFA doesn’t ban those items; it historically required registration, extra paperwork, and a $200 tax. Congress set that tax to $0 effective Jan. 1, 2026, prompting plaintiffs to argue the remaining requirements had lost their constitutional basis.
The divide: Gun-rights groups supported the ruling, while gun-control groups said it could weaken other firearm restrictions. Rules covering machine guns and explosives remain in place, and broader changes to the NFA would require Congress.

:📈 Today’s Poll: Silencer Standoff
With the NFA tax on silencers and short-barreled guns now set at $0, questions remain over whether the remaining registration and paperwork requirements should stay in place. Supporters of the ruling say the requirements should be removed or reduced, while critics argue they provide an important layer of oversight.
What approach should the federal government take on gun silencer regulations?

⚖️ Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty to Two Federal Charges

Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges, admitting he tracked and fatally shot UnitedHealthcare executive Brian Thompson, partly by posing as a healthcare investor. The judge said he should expect to serve at least 85% of his sentence, with a maximum of life.
Despite the plea, a GiveSendGo fund, already over $1.5 million, will stay online. Organizers said hosting the fundraiser isn’t an endorsement and pointed to his unresolved cases.
What’s next: Mangione still faces a state murder charge in New York next month. His lawyers are trying to dismiss that case on double-jeopardy grounds, arguing the federal and state charges stem from the same act. The Manhattan DA plans to fight it.
Fun Facts
📡 Technology: The word Wi-Fi doesn’t actually stand for anything. It sounds technical because the marketing worked.
🦓 Animals: Every zebra carries a stripe pattern unlike any other individual. Barcodes, but make it wild.
🧵 Invention: Velcro was created after burrs kept sticking to a dog’s fur. Nature filed no patent.
🤯 WTF: There are spiders that keep tiny frogs as roommates. The frogs eat ants that would otherwise attack the spiders’ eggs. Nature invented roommates who actually help with chores
TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
Helium
During the total solar eclipse on August 18, 1868, French astronomer Pierre Janssen observed a mysterious yellow line in the sun’s spectrum. British astronomer Norman Lockyer later concluded it came from an unknown element and named it helium after the Greek helios, meaning “sun.” William Ramsay isolated helium on Earth in 1895.
