🏛️ Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong Narrowly Loses Wisconsin Governor Primary
Wisconsin state representative Francesca Hong, a Democratic Socialist favored in the polls, narrowly lost the Democratic primary for governor to David Crowley, 39.8% to 39.4%. A win would have made her the country’s first Democratic Socialist governor.
Resurfaced comments backing defunding the police and tweets about canceling Thanksgiving became culture-war fuel, positions Hong distanced herself from in the campaign’s final weeks. The Republican Governors Association reported spending about $3.6 million on ads opposing her.
The debate: Her loss renewed debate among Democrats over how progressive candidates perform outside deep-blue cities and whether her past positions, or the unusual race dynamics, proved decisive.

⚖️ ProPublica Alleges Abuse Was Hidden at Tennessee Youth Facilities
A ProPublica investigation documented allegations of serious abuse at several Tennessee youth facilities connected to businessman Jason Crews and Wayne Halfway House. Former staff and youth said company leaders failed to report incidents to state regulators.
In one case, a teenager was assaulted by other detainees while a guard watched. In another, medical staff found bruises covering most of the teenager’s body that went unreported. Company policy reportedly required calling Crews before police or an ambulance could enter.
The fallout: Former employees say they were fired or pressured for calling 911, and that serious incidents were kept quiet on orders from the top. The company denies the allegations and calls the sources biased. Tennessee’s child services agency has now opened a review.

📱 Shake Shack Blames Glitch After Viral ‘No Tip’ Price Jump
A viral video appears to show a Shake Shack kiosk raising prices after a customer declined to tip. In the clip, the man orders three shakes, selects the no-tip option, gets a “pricing update” alert, and watches each shake climb by 50 cents.
The video reignited frustration over tipping culture, especially at a fast-food counter where tipping isn’t typically expected. It spread quickly as an example of prompts nudging customers to pay more.
The response: Shake Shack said the change was a system error, not company policy, and HMSHost, which operates the location, also called it a glitch it has since fixed. Many online remain skeptical of that explanation.
