🏛️ Graham’s Death Narrows GOP’s Senate Majority

Senator Lindsey Graham passed away this weekend from an aortic dissection, triggering a scramble over his replacement as Senator Mitch McConnell’s weekslong health silence strains Senate Republicans.
Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, to finish his term, following President Trump’s recommendation. South Carolina will hold a GOP primary in August to choose the party’s nominee for the November election; Rep. Ralph Norman is among those considering a run.
The math: Graham’s death narrows the GOP’s Senate majority to 51-47, since McConnell hasn’t returned since a June hospitalization. His office released a statement and photo this week citing a fall and pneumonia, though skeptics doubt its authenticity. The Senate returns facing a packed agenda.

🤖 New York Nurses Challenge AI-Linked Job Eliminations

Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx notified 12 nurses in utilization review that their positions would be eliminated, prompting the New York State Nurses Association to argue the jobs were being replaced by AI. The nurses, including one with nearly 40 years at the hospital, reviewed patient cases and helped secure insurance approvals for care.
The dispute comes as healthcare systems expand AI tools while nurses raise concerns about accuracy, oversight, and patient impact. A recent survey found 83% of nurses believe AI outputs require review before use.
The shift: Montefiore denies the union’s claims, saying technology investments are intended to improve patient care. Menlo Ventures estimated healthcare-AI spending reached $1.4 billion in 2025.

🤯 NYC Immigrant Enclave Map Sparks Backlash Over Little Italy

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration is facing backlash over a World Cup guide map highlighting roughly 30 immigrant enclaves, from Little Yemen to Little Odessa, while leaving out Little Italy.
Italian American groups and the City Council’s Italian Caucus argued the mayor’s office erased their community’s history. City Hall said the map highlights neighborhoods with substantial foreign-born populations and was not intended to be exhaustive.
The reversal: After the criticism, Mamdani’s office clarified the map was created by Eric Adams’ prior administration and said it would add Little Italy to a future map update, among the city’s more than 200 ethnic communities. Advocacy groups called it a partial win but say the dispute isn’t over.
