🏛️ Democrats Push Platner to Exit Senate Race After New Assault Claim

Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing a new sexual assault allegation from Jenny Racicot, who says he forced her into sex in 2021 despite her repeated objections. Platner denies the allegation, calling it false and politically motivated, while saying he is considering the best path forward for his campaign.
The allegation comes after months of scrutiny over Platner’s past conduct and follows earlier reports detailing claims from former partners about his treatment of women. Racicot’s account was supported by people she says she confided in at the time, as well as years-old private messages she shared with reporters.
The fallout: Leading Democrats, including Chuck Schumer, Elizabeth Warren, and Ro Khanna, have urged Platner to withdraw, and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund has revoked its endorsement. Platner has until July 13 to leave the race, after which Maine Democrats could select a replacement nominee.

💻 New Wildfire Betting Platform Draws Arson Concerns in California

A new prediction market called Wyldfyre lets users bet on California wildfire outcomes and is planning to allow real-money wagers soon. The platform says it aims to improve wildfire forecasting by tapping collective intelligence.
Critics, including a U.S. Forest Service spokesperson, warn that tying financial gain to wildfire outcomes could encourage arson and say the agency doesn’t rely on prediction markets for forecasting. The concern echoes backlash Polymarket faced last year for allowing bets on the deadly Los Angeles wildfires.
The backdrop: California enters this fire season after a record snow drought. Early, unusually hot spring weather dried out vegetation ahead of schedule, conditions that experts warn could worsen wildfire risk.

📊 Trump Claims Credit for Walmart Price Cuts

Walmart announced price reductions on hundreds of summer items, including ground beef, cherries, Coca-Cola, clothing, toys, and household goods. President Donald Trump said the retailer made the cuts at his administration’s request to mark America’s 250th anniversary, though Walmart’s announcement did not reference the White House.
The retailer instead said it was investing in lower prices to provide customers with better value. The announcement also follows months of tariff-related cost pressures that Walmart previously warned could lead to higher prices.
The context: Walmart recently received tariff refunds after court rulings blocked parts of the administration’s tariff policy, and its finance chief said the company chose to reinvest those funds into lower prices. Critics argue Trump is taking credit for reductions driven by those refunds rather than a White House initiative.
Fun Facts
🏛️ History: London’s Great Fire of 1666 destroyed more than 13,000 homes but was officially recorded as killing only a handful of people. Either everyone escaped... or someone was really bad at paperwork.
🌍 World: Bhutan absorbs more carbon dioxide than it emits because its laws require most of the country to remain forested. It’s basically the planet’s overachiever.
🏃 Sports: Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon in 1967 after entering under her initials, even as a race official tried to pull her off the course. She finished the race anyway, proving stubbornness can be a sport too.
🤯 WTF: Bir Tawil, a desert region between Egypt and Sudan, remains unclaimed because the countries recognize different borders that leave it belonging to neither side. It is considered the world’s only habitable territory not claimed by a recognized government.
TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
The Roswell Daily Record
On July 8, 1947, the Roswell Daily Record reported that the U.S. military had recovered a flying disc from a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The Army quickly walked the story back, saying it was actually a weather balloon, but the initial report fueled decades of UFO conspiracy theories. Roswell remains one of the most famous alleged UFO incidents in American pop culture.
