🏛️ GOP Lawmaker’s Affordability Comments Spark Backlash Amid Housing Bill Standoff

Rep. Troy Nehls faced viral backlash this week after suggesting Americans struggling financially simply don’t work as hard as he does, one of several Republican remarks on affordability drawing criticism. The comments came as President Trump continues withholding his signature from a bipartisan housing bill, tying it to unrelated voting-restriction legislation.
New federal data shows nearly half of Americans can’t afford essential living costs, while a government estimate projects millions losing health coverage after recent Medicaid cuts. Gas prices, though falling recently, remain well above levels seen before the Iran conflict began.
The response: House Majority Leader Steve Scalise pointed to the recent gas price dip as evidence of a turnaround. Vice President Vance blamed Democrats for blocking bipartisan cooperation, despite Democratic support for the housing bill Trump has stalled.

💻 House Passes KIDS Act Amid Warnings Over Age Verification

The House passed the KIDS Act in a 267–117 vote, aiming to strengthen online safety tools for children, including parental controls, platform safeguards, and expanded data protections. The bill now moves forward as lawmakers continue debating its scope and implementation.
Supporters say the legislation addresses growing concerns about children’s exposure to harmful online content and places clearer responsibility on platforms. Critics, including groups such as the EFF and ACLU, argue that its “know-or-should-know” standard could require broad age verification across users, raising privacy concerns.
The tension: Opponents warn this could push platforms toward ID or biometric checks, increasing data collection risks linked to past breaches involving verification systems. Some Senate Democrats also say the bill is now too weak after earlier provisions were removed, leaving its final path uncertain.

:📈 Today’s Poll: Safety Scrutiny
The KIDS Act aims to protect children online, but critics warn its vague standards could push platforms to verify nearly everyone’s age with ID scans, passports, or facial recognition. Supporters call the tradeoff worth it for child safety.

⚖️ Walz-Backed Pardon of Convicted Sex Offender Sparks Backlash

Minnesota’s Board of Pardons unanimously pardoned Tou Vang, a Thai-born immigrant convicted in 2005 of sexually abusing a 10-year-old. The pardon, backed by Gov. Tim Walz, clears his record and lets him fight deportation to Laos after a recent ICE sweep.
Officials, including Attorney General Keith Ellison and Chief Justice Natalie Hudson, cited an unsigned forgiveness statement from the victim and Vang’s decades-long clean record as key factors. The pardon drew fierce criticism from DHS and several lawmakers.
The record: The board denied a pardon the same day to another applicant facing deportation who showed no remorse for a similar offense. This year it has granted 83 pardons and denied 5.

Here are some sweet stories to carry you into the weekend...
An Alabama fire lieutenant responded to a medical call for a resident who collapsed from heat exhaustion while mowing his lawn, then came back and finished the job himself so the family had one less thing to worry about. That’s well above the job description. 🚒🌱
Kate Middleton crossed paths with 11-year-old Ted Haslam while he was hiking the National Three Peaks Challenge for a children’s charity, and surprised him with a personal donation and a handwritten note. Not a bad chance encounter on a mountain. 👑⛰️
A stranger on a Singapore train spent 15 minutes fanning a sweating toddler to help keep him cool while his mother struggled to calm him down. Sometimes kindness is simply showing up with a fan. 🚆💛
Fun Facts
🐍 Animals: A hagfish can release an amount of slime about 400 times its own volume, enough to suffocate a predator’s gills. It’s basically a living fire extinguisher, if fire extinguishers were rude.
📸 Photography: During the Victorian era, pets were regularly part of formal portrait sessions. People photographed themselves with their pets, exotic animals, and occasionally stuffed alligators. Instagram arrived a little early.
🥁 Music: Drummers can burn enough calories during a concert to rival what some professional athletes burn during a game. No treadmill, just tempo.
🤯 WTF: When Einstein died, a pathologist sliced his brain into 240 pieces and stored them in jars, some of which secretly traveled the country in a cider box for decades. Curiosity crossed a line.
TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
The Locomotive Mallard
On July 3, 1938, the British steam locomotive Mallard reached 126 mph in England, setting the world speed record for a steam-powered train. Engineers pushed the streamlined locomotive to its limit on a downhill stretch of track, and the run damaged parts of its engine afterward. Nearly a century later, no steam locomotive has topped that speed, making it one of rail’s most enduring records.
