LAW & POLICY
📜 Supreme Court Upholds Birthright Citizenship, Closes Out Term With Two More Rulings

The Supreme Court closed out its term, upholding birthright citizenship and striking down Trump’s executive order denying citizenship to children of undocumented or temporary immigrants. Chief Justice Roberts wrote the majority opinion; Justice Kavanaugh partly agreed but broke from its constitutional reasoning, so outlets reported the vote as either 5-4 or 6-3.
Trump called the ruling disappointing but said Congress could fix it through legislation, though most legal experts say that would actually require a constitutional amendment.
The rest: The Court upheld state bans on transgender athletes in school sports 6-3 and lifted limits on party spending tied to candidates, a move expected to favor better-funded Republican committees heading into the midterms.

🎬 Supergirl Bombs at Box Office With an Estimated $125 Million Loss

Supergirl became one of the summer’s biggest box office flops, earning just $68 million globally against a $170 million budget, with Deadline estimating a $125 million loss for Warner Bros. Critics were harsh, giving it 54% on Rotten Tomatoes despite a stronger 76% audience score.
Some blamed weak writing and pacing, while conservative commentators pointed to star Milly Alcock’s comments about scrutiny facing women in Hollywood as the spark for backlash over the film’s messaging. Others noted male-led superhero films have flopped recently too.
The response: DC Studios’ chief executives downplayed the loss, calling Supergirl one piece of a longer-term strategy the studio remains confident in.

🤯 88 Inmates Seize Control of North Carolina Jail for Nearly 10 Hours

Eighty-eight inmates overpowered three guards at the Bertie-Martin Regional Detention Center in Windsor, North Carolina, early Monday, seizing the facility and holding two guards hostage while a third escaped. About 20 local, state, and federal agencies, including the FBI, responded and negotiated for hours.
The roughly 90-bed jail is run independently of the two counties it serves, raising fresh questions about staffing. Scammers targeted anxious family members with fake offers to release loved ones for payment.
The resolution: Negotiators secured the hostages’ release along with dozens of inmates in stages, and investigators cleared the facility by early afternoon. Guards were treated for injuries. Governor Stein called for accountability and better pay and retention for correctional staff.

The Walkman
On July 1, 1979, Sony released the Walkman TPS-L2 in Japan, a portable cassette player that let people listen to music on the go for the first time. It retailed for about 33,000 yen, roughly $150 at the time, and shipped with two headphone jacks so friends could listen together. The device went on to sell over 200 million units worldwide and is widely credited with launching the personal audio industry that eventually led to the iPod and modern streaming.
