🌐 U.S. Strikes Iranian Air Defenses After Apache Helicopter Downed Near Hormuz

A U.S. Apache helicopter was shot down near the Strait of Hormuz on Monday in what Iran called an unintentional strike. After briefings with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, President Trump said the U.S. needed to respond, and American forces struck Iranian air defense systems.
Iran retaliated with strikes on U.S. targets in Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait, all reportedly intercepted. The exchange marks one of the sharpest escalations in a standoff both sides had largely sought to contain.
The fallout: Iran says U.S. strikes damaged water infrastructure serving about 20,000 people in an extreme-heat region. Tehran’s foreign ministry warns forces near its territory face ongoing risk of confrontation.

⚖️ Belfast Riots Erupt After Stabbing as Online Figures Stoke Anti-Immigrant Anger

A stabbing in Belfast, allegedly carried out by a man from Sudan, triggered unrest after online commentators used the attack to amplify anti-immigrant sentiment online. Masked rioters set homes and vehicles ablaze, targeting buildings believed to house immigrants.
The UK’s Restore party and activist Tommy Robinson called for continued demonstrations, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government of failing to control immigration. Elon Musk amplified similar posts, urging repeated protests to push for policy change.
The response: The stabbing victim’s family condemned the rioting, saying many immigrants in their community contribute meaningfully to local life. Police are investigating the arson attacks and working to identify those who incited violence online.

🏛️ Primary Results Reveal Cracks in Trump’s Endorsement Record Across Three States

Tuesday’s primaries brought mixed results across three states. In Maine, Graham Platner won the Democratic primary despite controversy over old social media posts and misconduct allegations. In South Carolina, Pamela Evette led the Republican gubernatorial primary but fell short of an outright win, forcing a runoff.
In Nevada, Trump-endorsed House candidates swept their primaries, and Gov. Joe Lombardo won easily despite being labeled one of the most vulnerable GOP governors by Fox News. The results highlight uneven dynamics within both parties ahead of the midterms.
The fallout: Nancy Mace finished last in South Carolina’s governor’s primary with 12% support after losing Trump’s endorsement. Evette heads to a runoff, while Platner’s win signals Democratic momentum in Maine despite his campaign’s controversies.

TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
Alcatraz
On the night of June 11, 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin slipped out of their cells at Alcatraz using papier-mâché dummy heads to fool guards during bed checks. They paddled into San Francisco Bay on a raft made from raincoats and were never seen again. The FBI officially closed the case in 1979, concluding they likely drowned, but their bodies were never found. The escape remains one of the few in Alcatraz’s history that was never definitively resolved.
