🏛️ NJ Officials Blocked, Pepper-Sprayed at ICE Detention Center During Detainee Strike

Detainees at Delaney Hall, a New Jersey ICE facility, launched a hunger and labor strike over Memorial Day weekend, with protests expanding over several days as activists, family members, and elected officials gathered outside the facility. About 300 detainees signed a letter describing conditions as physically and psychologically harmful.
Detainees alleged inadequate healthcare, spoiled food, and limited legal access. Tensions intensified after ICE transferred detainee Martin Soto despite advocates saying a court order barred his relocation. ICE disputes the claims, saying the facility provides meals, medical care, and follows security protocols.
The fallout: Representative Rob Menendez and Senator Andy Kim visited the facility and later raised concerns about detainee conditions. Kim was reportedly affected by pepper spray during clashes between protesters and ICE agents, while Governor Mikie Sherrill said she was denied entry to Delaney Hall.

💼 SpaceX Heads to Market With Trillion-Dollar Valuation and Mars Colony Pitch

SpaceX is preparing for what could be the largest IPO in history, targeting up to $75 billion in new funding at a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion, which would make Elon Musk the world’s first trillionaire.
The company lost nearly $5 billion last year, with Starlink as its only profitable segment, and critics have called the prospectus riddled with red flags.
The pitch: SpaceX projects a $28.5 trillion addressable market, mostly from space-based data centers, a concept experts have called technically implausible. Musk retains 85% voting control after the IPO, and his payout only triggers if SpaceX reaches a $7.5 trillion valuation and establishes a million-person Mars colony, conditions many observers consider far-fetched.

🌐 Pope Leo Calls for AI Regulation, Warns of Destabilization and Inequality

Pope Leo released a sweeping 40,000-word document warning that artificial intelligence risks eroding human judgment, deepening inequality, destabilizing democracy, and simulating care without real relationships. He compared AI’s impact on workers to the disruptions the Industrial Revolution brought in its time.
The statement arrived alongside an appearance by Anthropic co-founder Christopher Olah, who has advocated for a similar approach to responsible AI development.
The framework: Pope Leo called for stronger government regulation, worker protections, safeguards for minors, and maintained human control over weapons systems. He described AI as a genuine human achievement, insisting responsibility cannot be surrendered. Anthropic has drawn sharp White House criticism for opposing unrestricted military AI use.
Fun Facts
🍿 Food: Popcorn is one of the few foods that can naturally explode. Moisture trapped inside the kernel turns to steam until pressure causes it to burst. Corn basically contains tiny edible grenades.
🦾 Animals: The hero shrew, a tiny mammal from the Congo, can survive a 160-pound adult standing on it for several minutes thanks to its incredibly reinforced spine. Evolution looked at this little guy and built a tank by accident.
🌱 Botany: A 2026 study found that Chinese money plant leaves naturally grow in a Voronoi pattern, the same geometry used in city planning and computer networks. Your houseplant casually understands advanced geometry better than most people.
🤯 WTF: Fire doesn’t technically have a shadow, but smoke and hot air distort light around it, creating shadow-like effects. Even physics gets confused watching things burn.

The Golden Gate Bridge
On May 27, 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to foot traffic in San Francisco, with 200,000 people crossing the span before a single car was permitted. Competitors raced to claim unusual firsts: one man spent two hours rolling a pill box with his nose across the entire bridge to Marin County. President Franklin Roosevelt officially opened the bridge to vehicles the following day via telegraph key from the White House.
