🏥 WHO Declares Ebola Global Emergency as U.S. Funding Cuts Expose Response Gaps

The World Health Organization declared an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda a global health emergency, with 350 suspected cases and 91 deaths tied to the rare Bundibugyo strain, which carries around a 30% fatality rate.
The outbreak lands amid U.S. cuts to Ebola prevention funding, a scaled-back USAID, and a withdrawal from the WHO. The administration has framed these decisions as reducing wasteful foreign spending and addressing concerns about WHO transparency, though public health experts warn the rollbacks have weakened early-detection systems.
The exposure: At least six Americans have been exposed, one confirmed and three classified as high-risk contact. A level four travel advisory now covers both countries. Experts warn that a weeks-long incubation window may mean case counts substantially understate the true spread.

🏛️ DOJ Creates $1.776B Taxpayer Fund to Settle Trump’s Three Personal Lawsuits

The Justice Department settled three personal Trump lawsuits simultaneously, covering the Mar-a-Lago raid, leaked first-term tax returns, and the Russia investigation, and created a taxpayer-funded “Anti-Weaponization Fund” worth $1.776 billion. Trump receives no direct payment, only a formal apology.
A five-member commission, appointed by the attorney general and subject to Trump’s removal authority, will run the fund, which can reportedly reach nearly 1,600 pardoned January 6 defendants by a December 2028 deadline.
The scrutiny: Acting AG Todd Blanche, formerly on Trump’s personal criminal defense team, signed the settlement. A federal judge had been reviewing whether the cases were legally valid, given Trump effectively sued agencies he now oversees. The settlement landed two days before that ruling was due.

The DOJ created a $1.776 billion taxpayer-funded commission to settle Trump’s personal lawsuits, with funds potentially flowing to pardoned January 6 defendants. Supporters say the settlements address documented government overreach; critics say the fund’s structure is the very thing it claims to fix.

⚖️ Three Austin Teens Arrested After Two-Day Shooting and Crime Spree

Three teenagers were arrested in Austin after a two-day crime spree from Saturday night into Sunday that included at least 12 shootings, multiple vehicle thefts, and a shelter-in-place order for South Austin. Four people were injured, none fatally.
The suspects, ages 15, 16, and 17, allegedly fired at apartment complexes, homes, pedestrians, and two fire stations. Two were caught in a traffic stop; the 16-year-old evaded police until late Sunday.
The backdrop: Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said no motive has been identified. The 17-year-old had a prior warrant for theft from the same gun store the 15-year-old allegedly targeted this weekend. All three are now in juvenile detention.
Fun Facts
🧑🎨 Artists: Salvador Dalí used to carry around a pet anteater. He would sometimes walk it through public streets in Paris. Surrealism apparently wasn’t just an art style, it was a full-time lifestyle commitment.
🐜 Animals: Speaking of anteaters…they can eat up to 35,000 ants and termites in a single day. Instead of teeth, they use a tongue that can flick in and out around 150 times per minute, coated in sticky saliva to trap insects. Nature’s little vacuum cleaners.
🌊 Geography: The Pacific Ocean is steadily shrinking while the Atlantic Ocean is expanding. Tectonic plates push the Atlantic wider by a few centimeters annually, meaning the continents are essentially participating in the slowest custody battle imaginable.
🤯 WTF: GPS satellites have to correct for time dilation because they age slightly faster than people on Earth. Somewhere in orbit, a satellite is aging weirdly so you can find Starbucks faster.
