🌐 US-Iran Deal Close as Satellite Images Reveal Disputed Damage Toll

The U.S. and Iran are nearing a one-page memorandum to end hostilities and open a 30-day negotiation window. Key terms include an Iranian nuclear enrichment moratorium of 12 to 15 years, U.S. sanctions relief, and a gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The deal leaves significant gaps, including no ballistic missile restrictions and Iran retaining more than half its missile capacity.
The damage: Washington Post satellite imagery found Iran damaged or destroyed at least 228 U.S. military structures and assets across the region. 13 U.S. troops were killed and hundreds wounded, totals the Pentagon had not publicly confirmed.

🏥 Medical Groups Push Back on RFK Jr. Antidepressant Initiative

Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr. launched a federal program targeting what he characterizes as excessive antidepressant prescribing, directing providers toward therapy, behavioral changes, sleep, and exercise instead. No major medical organizations attended.
RFK has previously linked antidepressants to school shootings and described quitting them as harder than heroin withdrawal, positions medical experts say lack scientific support. About 16% of U.S. adults take antidepressants.
The pushback: The American Psychiatric Association strongly objected, arguing the program stigmatizes psychiatric medication. Medical professionals broadly say the real problem is insufficient access to comprehensive care, not overmedication.

🏛️ Trump Picks Oust Five Indiana Republicans Who Defied His Gerrymander

Trump-backed candidates defeated five of seven Indiana Republicans who voted against his gerrymandering proposal last December, when 21 GOP senators joined Democrats to block the redrawn districts. Several received death threats after Trump named them publicly.
The results reinforce Trump’s primary grip despite low approval ratings. Democrats showed strength elsewhere: a 20-point Michigan special election win and a 10-point national generic ballot lead.
The results: In Ohio, Vivek Ramaswamy won the Republican gubernatorial primary, though far-right commentator Nick Fuentes urged followers to vote Democrat in protest. Trump’s former ICE deputy director also lost her Ohio House primary despite centering her campaign on immigration enforcement.

TODAY’S QUIZ ANSWER:
Beethoven’s Ninth
On May 7, 1824, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony premiered at Kärntnertortheater, with Beethoven himself on stage following the score alongside the conductor. He had been nearly deaf for years and could not hear the orchestra or the audience’s reaction; reportedly, a soloist had to turn him around to face the cheering crowd. The Ninth remains one of the most performed symphonies in history, and its final movement, Ode to Joy, later became the official anthem of the European Union.
