📊 Fed Chair Powell Announces Plans to Stay on the Board

Jerome Powell will remain on the Federal Reserve’s governing board after his chairmanship ends May 15th, becoming the first departing Fed chair to do so since 1948. His continued seat means Trump’s three appointees remain one short of the four needed to control the seven-member board through at least January 2028.
Powell pointed to oil price increases from the Middle East conflict and tariff effects on goods as the forces behind 3.5% headline inflation and 3.2% core inflation in March. The Fed’s internal disagreement on rate direction is its most pronounced since 1992.
The pressure: Powell cited ongoing legal challenges against the Fed as a key reason for his decision to stay. Trump responded by mocking Powell’s career prospects on Truth Social.

📜 Louisiana Halts Congressional Primaries After Supreme Court Voting Rights Ruling

Louisiana’s governor and attorney general suspended six congressional primaries with early voting days away, making the state the first to act following the Supreme Court’s decision gutting Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
The move gives Republicans time to redraw congressional maps, but leaves the status of other May 16th contests (Senate races, constitutional amendments, and local elections) uncertain. Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia officials are evaluating similar redistricting actions.
The concern: State Representative Kyle Green, a former assistant state attorney general, warned that halting an already-underway election raises serious constitutional questions. Analysts project the ruling could shift 19 or more House seats to Republicans nationwide.

:📈 Today’s Poll: District Dispute
Louisiana officials halted six congressional primaries just days before early voting after a Supreme Court ruling weakened parts of the Voting Rights Act. Supporters say the pause gives states time to redraw maps in line with the new legal standard; critics say stopping an election already underway raises constitutional concerns and could undermine voter trust.
What role should states play in adjusting elections after major court rulings?

🎤 Kirk and Owens Trade Accusations After White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Erika Kirk, widow of Charlie Kirk and leader of Turning Point USA, posted a video defending her decision to attend the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In the video, she criticized journalists, comedian Jimmy Kimmel, entertainer Druski, and Candace Owens.
Kirk’s sharpest accusation claimed Owens had publicly alleged she was responsible for her husband’s death. Owens denied making that specific allegation, though her months of related commentary remained contested.
The response: Owens described the video as a staged performance and said Kirk alone was responsible for attending the event. Online reactions were mixed, with much of the criticism focused on Kirk’s tone and presentation rather than the substance of her claims.

🦷 Biology: Teeth are the only part of the human body that cannot heal themselves. Once enamel is damaged, the body has no way to naturally rebuild it.
👠 Fashion: Persian cavalry soldiers in the 10th century wore heels to keep their feet locked in stirrups for horseback archery. Women’s fashion wouldn’t adopt them for another 600 years. Six centuries of lag time.
🐌 Animals: Snails can detect humidity changes through their skin. When the air gets more moist, often before or during rain, they become more active. When it is dry, they retreat into their shells to avoid drying out.
🤯WTF: In 2018, a Maine dairy company agreed to a $5 million settlement over a missing Oxford comma. The lack of punctuation in a state overtime law changed how truck drivers qualified for overtime pay. Grammar has consequences.
