Saudi Arabia Is Pushing Trump to Escalate. Iran Says There’s No Deal.
The big picture: While Trump claims negotiations with Iran are producing “major points of agreement,” Saudi Arabia and the UAE are reportedly pressing him to continue the war and put boots on the ground. Iran publicly denies any negotiations are taking place. The U.S. military buildup continues to grow, and Israel announced an expanded occupation of southern Lebanon.
Why it matters: The gap between what the president says and what’s happening on the ground keeps widening. More countries are being pulled into the conflict, not fewer. The 82nd Airborne may be next to deploy. And the people pushing Trump hardest to escalate are the Gulf states that initially didn’t want this war.
The Gulf push: Saudi Crown Prince MBS has reportedly been calling the war a “historic opportunity” and pushing Trump to continue. He’s argued the U.S. should consider putting troops in Iran to seize energy infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has reportedly told the U.S. it’s ready to strike Iran if its own power and water plants are targeted, and has agreed to let American forces use an air base. The UAE has been pressing Trump in regular calls to destroy Iran’s military capabilities and is debating sending its own forces.
The strategic split: Israel wants regime collapse. Analysts say Israel would accept a failed Iranian state. Saudi Arabia sees that as a security nightmare because leaderless militias could keep attacking Gulf oil infrastructure. The Gulf states and Israel agree on continuing the war but not on what the endgame looks like.
The “negotiations”: Trump claims “almost all points of agreement” on 15 items. Iran says “no negotiation whatsoever.” The reality appears to be indirect talks through Egyptian, Pakistani, and Turkish mediators. Iran’s demands include charging ships to transit the Strait, closing U.S. bases in the Gulf, ending attacks on Hezbollah, and war damage compensation.
When asked who he’s talking to, Trump said “a top person” he wouldn’t name because “I don’t want them to be killed.” When asked who’d control the Strait: “Maybe me? Me and the ayatollah, whoever the next ayatollah is.”
The military buildup: 2,500 Marines redirected from the Pacific. Another 2,500 deployed. 82nd Airborne combat brigade under consideration. Airstrikes continue on both sides. Iranian missiles today hit three residential buildings in Tel Aviv with a 100kg warhead Israel says it hadn’t encountered before.
Lebanon: Israel’s defense minister announced expanded occupation of southern Lebanon. Another minister called for annexation. Over 1,000 killed and 1 million displaced.
By the numbers:
15 — “points of agreement” Trump claims (unverified)
0 — negotiations Iran says are happening
5,000+ — additional Marines deployed or redirected to the region
100 kg — warhead weight on Iranian missile that hit Tel Aviv today
1,000+ — killed in Israel’s Lebanon offensive
1 million+ — displaced in Lebanon
The bottom line: The president says the war is almost over. Saudi Arabia and the UAE are pushing him to keep going. Iran denies any deal exists. The military is still growing. Israel is expanding into Lebanon. And the gap between the rhetoric and reality keeps getting wider. Pay attention to what’s being deployed, not what’s being posted.
