A Quadruple Amputee Cornhole Champion Was Just Arrested for Murder
The big picture: Dayton Webber, a professional cornhole player who lost all four limbs as a baby, was arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a passenger in his car during an argument. Old YouTube videos have surfaced showing how he’s able to fire a handgun, which has made the case go viral.
Why it’s trending: The case raises an immediate question that a local news anchor put bluntly: “How did someone with no hands allegedly shoot someone?” A YouTube video from an account believed to be Webber’s answers it directly.
Who he is: Webber lost his arms and legs at 10 months old to treat a bacterial infection. He taught himself to write, drive, and play cornhole. He was named the best cornhole player in Maryland, became the first quadruple amputee in the American Cornhole League, was featured on ESPN, and wrote for the TODAY Show.
What happened: Police in La Plata, Maryland say Webber shot and killed front-seat passenger Bradrick Michael Wells during an argument while two witnesses sat in the back seat. Webber allegedly asked the witnesses to help remove the body. They refused and fled. Webber fled with the victim still in the car. Wells’ body was found in a yard 15 miles away two hours later. Webber was arrested at a Virginia hospital.
The video: A YouTube account believed to be Webber’s includes a video titled “No Hands No Feet Shooting 9mm Handgun!” showing him loading, aiming, and firing a handgun.
The charges: First-degree murder, second-degree murder, and related offenses. He’s awaiting extradition to Maryland.
The response: The American Cornhole League said: “Our thoughts are with all those impacted, including the family and loved ones of Bradrick Michael Wells.”
The bottom line: A man who built an inspiring public story out of extraordinary adversity is now charged with taking someone’s life. The internet is focused on the most sensational detail. But a person is dead, a family is grieving, and the legal process is just beginning.
